Pull-up bars under chestnut trees, newly resurfaced running tracks, and panoramic mountain views—outdoor fitness in Zurich has never been more accessible. Over the past three years, the city has invested heavily in free public exercise parks, and participation is climbing. On a recent Saturday morning, the calisthenics station by Mythenquai was teeming with locals knocking out pull-ups before an early swim.

Interest in free, outdoor exercise has surged again this June, as Zurich experienced its longest run of unseasonably warm days since local records began in 1876, according to MeteoSwiss. High temperatures, coupled with record-low rainfall, have driven thousands to parks and lakefront spaces, particularly before mid-morning heat peaks. With public gyms and sports halls crowded—and many people watching their wallets as rents and insurance costs climb—being able to train in scenic outdoor spaces without a fee has growing appeal.

The Lakefront Classics and Urban Upgrades

Zurich’s outdoor calisthenics parks are concentrated along the western lakefront and in key urban green spaces. Mythenquai, at the heart of Seefeld, is arguably the best known. Here, beneath the linden trees at Mythenquai 89, you’ll find a cluster of pull-up and parallel bars, benches for triceps dips, and a stretch zone—all a ten-minute jog from Bellevue. Early birds start arriving just after sunrise, while lunch breaks often bring groups from nearby banks and offices. Directly on the water, it’s also popular with triathletes combining strength work with open-water swimming.

Further west, the free fitness circuit at Werdinsel in Höngg offers a 2.2 km loop with six exercise stations, each focusing on different muscle groups. It’s an initiative from Grün Stadt Zürich, part of a wider €18 million program that has added 14 outdoor fitness parks since 2019. Equipment ranges from classic “Vita Parcours”-style wooden apparatus—originally a Swiss invention in the late 1960s—to contemporary metal rigs catering to today’s calisthenics trends. Werdinsel’s shade and island vibe make it especially inviting on hot days, and nearby changing cabins and fountains add to the convenience.

Fitness Data: Who’s Using Zurich’s Free Outdoor Gyms?

The numbers show Zurich’s appetite for public fitness is growing. In 2025, over 115,000 people logged their workouts via the official Vita Parcours app, according to Pro Juventute, the national organisation managing over 500 courses in Switzerland. Zurich’s courses had some of the highest participation, particularly on weekends. Meanwhile, a survey by Sportamt Zürich found that the percentage of residents engaging in weekly outdoor exercise rose from 53% in 2018 to 61% in 2025, with women aged 20-39 showing the most marked increase. For comparison, a municipal gym pass starts at CHF 55 per month, while these outdoor facilities remain entirely free, year-round and open to all ages.

If you prefer heights, Uetliberg’s circuit along the Felsenegg trail offers not only marked strength stations but also some of the most panoramic views in the region. The loop near Triemli starts at the base of the cable car station and leads through forested terrain—a favourite for both trail runners and families. Maps and exercise instructions are posted at each station and updated seasonally.

All these facilities are open access; you don’t need to book or register. While equipment maintenance is handled by Grün Stadt Zürich, users are encouraged to report damage via the Züri wie neu app. All stations also carry QR codes linking to exercise videos and printable routines, supporting newcomers alongside more experienced regulars.

Getting Started: How to Make the Most of Zurich’s Free Fitness Parks

The hot July weather isn’t expected to let up, making dawn or early evening the most comfortable (and safest) times for strenuous exercise outdoors. Bring your own water, as fountains are available at most sites, and opt for lighter, sweat-wicking clothing. Free guided sessions are periodically offered on weekends by local trainers—check the Grün Stadt Zürich website for details. Remember that while these public resources are excellent for general fitness, consulting your GP or a qualified local sports medicine physician is wise before starting any new workout routine, especially if you have existing health conditions.

With so many free, high-quality options from the city centre to the forest edges, Zurich’s outdoor gyms are a summer invitation few can refuse. Lace up, pack a towel, and head to your local park—your new workout could be just a few tram stops away.
