From the historic Seebad Utoquai to the hidden Mythenquai rock pools, here’s where serious swimmers and weekend warriors take their laps when the mercury rises.

Zurich’s open-air pools are full as the city swelters through another wave of July heat, with lap swimmers staking out early lanes at both lakeside and neighbourhood institutions.
As locals seek respite from steadily rising summer temperatures—Zurich’s weather station at Zürich-Fluntern logged average June highs of 27°C, the highest since 2019—interest in outdoor fitness facilities, particularly for dedicated lap swimming, is surging. With school holidays in full swing and tourist arrivals peaking, premium lap space is suddenly a hot commodity.
Seebad Utoquai, east of Bellevue on Utoquai street, remains unmatched for its central location and well-maintained wooden decks built back in 1890. The Utoquai’s 33-metre lap section draws everyone from veteran triathletes to office workers squeezing in a pre-commute session. Management confirms a noticeable uptick this year, with weekday mornings the best time for uninterrupted lengths.
Across the Enge bridge, Mythenquai’s See- und Strandbad caters to a wide spectrum: here, a marked 50-metre lap zone is set along calm, shallow lake water, flanked by granite-lined rock pools where strong swimmers power through longer sessions alongside ducks and early-morning paddleboarders. The site’s proximity to Rote Fabrik and the Wollishofen ferry makes it accessible for residents from every quadrant of the city, and the annual Sommerpass (CHF 60 for adults, valid at all city outdoor facilities) has proved particularly popular this season.
Even niche neighbourhood pools cater to lap swimmers craving sun and scenery. Strandbad Tiefenbrunnen, off Bellerivestrasse, offers a wilder, more natural vibe, with cordoned-off rock “corridors” that see local swim coaches leading group drills every Wednesday at 7am. The clear, slightly brisk water—hardly cresting above 20°C before noon—attracts hardcore cold-water enthusiasts, even in midsummer.
According to Stadt Zürich’s office for Sportanlagen, outdoor pool attendance citywide hit 1.25 million last summer, with lap-swimming zones accounting for about a third of all daily visitors during peak days in July and August. Admission remains relatively affordable: single entry to most lakeside baths costs between CHF 8 and CHF 9 (reduced to as little as CHF 3 for students and apprentices). For those favouring flexibility, the digital Züri-Bäder app allows advance lane reservations and real-time updates on pool occupancy—a feature that helped reduce crowding complaints by 18% since last summer.
Beyond the city, local rock pools near Sihlwald and Feldmoos see increased use by club swimmers training for September’s Zurichsee-Schwimmen, which returns this year after a hiatus. Safety is top of mind: lifeguards at public facilities are on duty from 9am to 8pm, with daily swim testing (Wassertemp.) displayed at entrances and online.
Lap swimmers planning their routes should arrive early on weekends or look to the extended evening opening hours at Seebad Enge (open Tuesdays and Thursdays until 10pm). Regulars recommend bringing cashless payment and a lightweight dry bag for lakeside changing. For those just dipping their toes, most facilities offer affordable swim classes, while seasoned athletes can inquire about organized morning sets through clubs like Schwimmverein Zürich.
Zurich’s love affair with outdoor water endures. And whether it’s for mindful exercise, marathon training or a social lane with friends, the city’s pools remain a rare urban privilege—one best enjoyed before August crowds descend and the lake begins to cool again.
