Zurich Launches Free Fitness Programs for 65-Plus Residents This Month
Stadt Zürich begins expanded no-cost group sessions for residents aged 65 and older at lakeside and mountain sites this month.
How we reported this
Stadt Zürich rolled out free senior fitness programs on July 1 with daily group classes at the Bürkliplatz promenade and guided walks along the Uetliberg trail network.
The expansion arrives as Zurich records a 14 percent rise in residents over 65 since the 2020 census, pushing demand for low-cost preventive health options in a city already known for its alpine wellness routines and public sports infrastructure.
Locations and weekly schedule
Classes meet every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 9 a.m. on the paved path beside Quaibrücke, where instructors lead 45-minute balance and mobility drills using resistance bands supplied by the council. On Tuesdays and Thursdays participants gather at the lower Uetliberg station for moderate hikes that finish at the summit restaurant by 11 a.m., with return transport covered by the city’s public transport pass.
Additional sessions run at the open-air facilities in Kreis 4 near Hardbrücke, focusing on seated strength work for those with limited mobility. All programs require only a free registration card issued at any Stadt Zürich district office or online through the municipal portal.
Participation numbers and health data
Last year 1,850 seniors completed at least one full term, according to the city’s sports department annual report released in May. Average attendance per session reached 42 people, and a follow-up survey showed a 22 percent drop in reported falls among regular participants compared with the prior year.
City records list no charge for any of the sessions, though participants cover their own tram or train fares if they choose not to walk to the meeting points. The programs draw on Switzerland’s national emphasis on outdoor activity and complement existing offerings at Hallenbad City indoor pools.
Residents can sign up through the end of July by visiting the Stadt Zürich website or calling the sports hotline listed on district notice boards. New participants receive a printed timetable and safety checklist at registration.
