Interlaken Day Trip from Zurich: Jungfrau Region, Lakes & Alpine Adventures
Interlaken, nestled between two glacial lakes in the heart of the Swiss Alps, is one of the world's most dramatic resort towns — and from Zurich, it's a remarkably easy day trip: just 2 hours by direct InterCity Express train, running several times daily. Interlaken sits at the gateway to the Jungfrau Region, home to Switzerland's highest train station (Jungfraujoch, 3,454 metres, nicknamed the "Top of Europe") and some of the most spectacular alpine scenery on earth — the Eiger North Face looms directly above the town. The journey to Jungfraujoch takes about 2 additional hours from Interlaken and is expensive (around CHF 225 return), but on a clear day the panoramic views of the Aletsch Glacier — the longest in the Alps — are incomparable. For a more accessible alpine experience, the train to Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen from Interlaken (30 minutes each) accesses world-class hiking trails and the famous Trümmelbach Falls (inside a mountain, channelling glacial meltwater). Summer brings paragliding, canyon-swinging, and white-water rafting; winter brings skiing at Grindelwald First and Mürren. Interlaken is the Swiss Alps made accessible, and from Zurich it's a day trip that feels extraordinary.
