Bahnhofstrasse Zurich: World-Famous Shopping Street Guide

Bahnhofstrasse is Zurich's legendary main shopping street, a 1.4-kilometre boulevard running from the Central train station to Lake Zurich that is consistently ranked among the world's most exclusive retail destinations. The street is home to the flagship stores of Switzerland's finest watchmakers, jewellers, and luxury brands alongside international fashion houses that make this one of the most impressive retail corridors anywhere in Europe.

The street is famously said to be paved above the vaults of Zurich's private banks, where an estimated $11 trillion in assets are held by international clients beneath the very pavement where pedestrians stroll among the watch boutiques. Whether or not this legend is entirely accurate, it perfectly captures the relationship between Swiss banking, discretion, and luxury commerce that Bahnhofstrasse so elegantly embodies.

Beyond the luxury retail, Bahnhofstrasse offers some excellent department stores and mid-range shopping that makes it accessible to visitors who aren't in the market for a Patek Philippe watch. The street terminates at Burkliplatz on Lake Zurich, where a pleasant lakeside promenade and the famous Badi (outdoor lakeside swimming pool) offer a beautiful contrast to the retail intensity of the street's upper half. The street's Christmas decorations and the Zurich Christmas market at its base are among the most beautiful seasonal displays in any European city.
