Zurich Christmas Markets: The Complete 2025 Winter Guide
Zurich's Christmas markets rank among Europe's finest, transforming the city's historic squares and lakefront into glowing winter tableaux from late November through Christmas Eve. The combination of Swiss quality craftsmanship, excellent mulled wine (Glühwein), and the city's already spectacular winter scenery creates an atmosphere that rewards even jaded Christmas market veterans.
The main market at Hauptbahnhof train station is legendary — hosted inside the main hall under a spectacular glittering tree installation, it is one of the world's only indoor Christmas markets of this scale and quality. The Wienachtsdorf at Bellevue Square focuses on Swiss artisan crafts, while the Sternenchristchindlimärt at Münsterhof in the old town is more traditional, with wooden chalets selling handmade ornaments and regional food specialities.
December weekends in Zurich fill up fast — book accommodation at least two months ahead if visiting on a Saturday. Arrival by train is strongly recommended, as parking near all major market sites is extremely limited. The markets run from late November (exact dates vary by year) through December 24th, with reduced hours on Christmas Eve.
