Zurich Food Guide: Fondue, Rösti & Swiss Chocolate
Swiss cuisine is richer, heartier and more interesting than its reputation suggests — and Zurich is the best city in Switzerland to eat well. From legendary cheese fondue to crispy Züri-Geschnetzeltes (veal strips in cream sauce), the city's food culture rewards exploration beyond the tourist menu.
Must-Try Zurich Dishes
- Züri-Geschnetzeltes — thin-sliced veal in cream and white wine sauce with Rösti. Zurich's signature dish. Best at Restaurant Kronenhalle (legendary, walls hung with Picasso originals) or Haus zum Rüden (guildhall setting on the Limmat).
- Cheese Fondue — a winter ritual. The classic Moitié-moitié (half Gruyère, half Vacherin). Zunfthaus zur Zimmerleuten in a guildhall on the river does it superbly.
- Rösti — grated pan-fried potato cake. Swiss-German soul food served with everything.
Swiss Chocolate
Sprüngli on Bahnhofstrasse (and Paradeplatz) — Zurich's most celebrated confectioner since 1836. The Luxemburgerli macaron is the house speciality. Lindt Home of Chocolate (Kilchberg, 20 min by boat) has the world's largest chocolate shop and interactive museum (CHF15).
