Grossmunster Zurich: Reformation Cathedral & Tower Views

The Grossmunster is Zurich's most important historical church, a Romanesque cathedral standing above the Limmat River whose twin towers have defined the city's skyline for over 800 years. Built on the site where, according to legend, Charlemagne discovered the graves of the martyred saints Felix and Regula, the cathedral became the epicentre of the Swiss Protestant Reformation in the 16th century under the reformer Huldrych Zwingli.

Zwingli began his ministry at the Grossmunster in 1519, launching a reform movement that would transform not just Switzerland but much of northern Europe. The cathedral's characteristically plain interior reflects the reformers' rejection of Catholic ornamentation — though the modern stained glass windows by artist Sigmar Polke, installed in 2009, add a remarkable contemporary counterpoint to the medieval stone surroundings.

Climbing the Karlsturm (Charles Tower) rewards visitors with one of Zurich's finest panoramas — the Old Town rooftops, the Limmat River, the spires of the Fraumunster across the water, and on clear days the distant Alps provide a view that puts the city's extraordinary geographic setting into immediate perspective. The tower climb is accessible and affordable, making it one of the most rewarding quick detours in the Old Town. The adjacent Wasserkirche on its river island is also worth a brief visit for its Gothic architecture and lakeside position.
