Zurich Hiking & Outdoors: Best Walks, Viewpoints & Day Hikes Guide

Zurich's extraordinary natural setting — a city built around a lake and framed by hills and pre-Alpine terrain — makes it one of the most accessible cities in Europe for outdoor activity. You can hike to a panoramic viewpoint above the city in under 30 minutes from the centre, swim in the lake or river from municipal baths that are among the finest urban bathing facilities anywhere, or be on an Alpine trail above 2,000 metres within 90 minutes by train. For a major financial centre, Zurich's relationship with outdoor life is unusually intimate and genuinely democratic.

The closest hiking from the city centre is on the Uetliberg — Zurich's local mountain, rising to 871 metres and accessible by the S10 train in 25 minutes from Zurich HB. The summit ridge offers a panoramic view over the city, the lake, and on clear days the entire arc of the Swiss and Austrian Alps from Säntis to the Bernese Oberland. A popular route continues south along the ridge trail to Felsenegg and down to Lake Zürich at Adliswil via cable car — a half-day loop that feels far more remote than the suburban train connections suggest. Spring and autumn offer the clearest conditions; the trail is maintained year-round and suitable for ordinary walking shoes.

In summer, Zurich's river and lake bathing culture is one of the great pleasures of Swiss life. The Flussbad Oberer Letten — a former industrial canal converted into an urban swimming facility — fills every afternoon with swimmers drifting downstream in the current before climbing the ladder to repeat. The Seebad Utoquai on the lake's east shore is the most beautiful of Zurich's historic lake baths. For Alpine day trips, Braunwald, Flumserberg, and the Schächen valley above Altdorf are all reachable within 90 minutes by train, offering hiking trails from 1,500 to 3,000 metres with exceptional lake and glacier views.
