Zurich Wine Bars: Swiss Wine, Natural Bottles & the City's Most Sophisticated Drinking Scene
Zurich's wine bar scene has developed into one of Europe's most interesting in the past decade — a development that surprises visitors who associate Switzerland primarily with beer and schnapps. The city's wine culture has two distinct components: Swiss wine, which is produced in the country but almost entirely consumed domestically (less than 2% of Swiss wine is exported), and an international natural wine scene that has embraced Zurich as one of its European capitals. The Zurich wine drinker is typically well-travelled, willing to pay premium prices for quality (Swiss incomes support this), and genuinely interested in the stories behind what's in the glass.
Swiss wine itself deserves more attention than it receives internationally. The Valais region produces outstanding Chasselas and Pinot Noir that are rarely seen outside the country. Zürich's own wine region, the Zürichsee, produces light Pinot Noir from lakeside vineyards visible from the city. Zurich's better wine bars make a point of pouring Swiss bottles alongside French, Italian, and Georgian natural wines, often with sommeliers who can articulate the regional differences with the precision of a watchmaker discussing movements. The wine bar geography of Zurich concentrates in the Langstrasse area, the Zürich West district, and the old town, with several of the best bars having opened in the past three years. For wine travellers, Zurich offers the unusual combination of Swiss domestic production you cannot access elsewhere and an international natural wine scene operating at the highest European level.
