Zurich’s Badi season is in full swing and lap swimmers are claiming their lanes as the city’s legendary outdoor pools fill with early morning regulars and after-work athletes. Across the left and right banks, the race is on for the best length-friendly swims, from the urban elegance of Seebad Enge to the historic open-air pools hidden along the Limmat.

The return of Zurich’s outdoor pool culture marks more than a summer tradition. With forecasts predicting the mercury will hit 30°C for at least two more weeks according to MeteoSwiss, city residents are searching for swimming options that combine exercise and cool relief. More Zurichers than ever are choosing fresh-air laps over gym treadmills: Stadt Zürich data shows outdoor pool attendance jumping by 15% since 2019. It’s partly about health—swimming is top-rated for low-impact, whole-body exercise—but also about reviving a lakeside lifestyle that’s uniquely local.

Urban Oases for Distance Swimmers

Among lap devotees, Strandbad Mythenquai remains a stand-out. Set on Mythenquai 95, its 250-metre marked swimming area in the lake lures sunrise groups and serious after-work swimmers alike. The city-run facility puts out lane buoys from 7 a.m.; on busy days, lifeguards recommend arriving before 8 a.m. for undisturbed lengths. Further east, Seebad Utoquai’s floating timber deck at Utoquai 6 offers classic 19th-century charm, plus 75-metre-long protected lanes stretching into the clear waters near Zürichhorn. Both sites operate under strict water quality guidelines—a crucial factor, given Zurich’s status for EU-leading lake purity.

For those craving something wilder, Werdinsel’s river pool on the city’s west side is a favourite. Here, a 200-metre Limmat channel flows between boulders, giving lap swimmers a taste of alpine river exercise inside the city limits. The Verein Flussbad, a local water safety and sports association, organises informal river lap sessions each July, attracting swimmers from Altstetten and beyond.

Access and Amenities

Prices for a day pass remain affordable: adults pay CHF 8 at the vast majority of city-run badis, while a full-season pass (Gönnerabo) runs CHF 110. Early birds and late-season swimmers praise the city’s online Badi-Barometer, which updates crowd levels, water temperature—and occasionally lets the first 100 pre-dawn arrivals in for free on extra-hot days. Zurich’s public transport system (ZVV) links major pools, with the 4 and 33 trams putting both Utoquai and Mythenquai within 10 minutes of Stadelhofen or Wiedikon.

Zurich maintains over 17 officially sanctioned outdoor pools and natural bathing zones, according to Stadt Zürich’s 2025 facilities report. Of these, at least six offer marked lanes of 50 metres or more—a rare luxury in most European urban centres. Safety measures include regularly stationed lifeguards, automated water quality testing, and, at Werdinsel’s river runs, warning systems for fast current days.

With the summer heat showing no sign of letting up, local lap swimmers can expect early mornings and late evenings to remain the best chance for quiet water. Many facilities—such as Seebad Enge and Flussbad Oberer Letten—extend their opening hours to 9 p.m. on warm days, allowing working Zurichers to squeeze in a workout before sunset. Swimmers should check online for live capacity, weather alerts and session times. And for those ready to commit: the city’s new Lap Swimming Club, which launched quietly this June, is open to all residents capable of swimming 1,000 metres unaided—proving there’s never been a better moment to dive in.
